It is an annual or biennial plant of the Brassicaceae family. It is a variety of rape, but is quite different from Chinese cabbage and other species of Kyona. The basal leaves are clumpy, spatula-shaped, oblong, almost entire, not lobed like Kyona, and somewhat thick. In spring, it produces yellow cruciferous flowers (known as rape blossoms). It has a unique fragrance and spiciness, and is mainly used in pickles. Its place of origin is unknown, but it was cultivated in Mibu, Kyoto for a long time, hence the name, and it is also sometimes called Mizuna.

アブラナ科の一，二年草。アブラナの変種であるが，ハクサイなどとはかなり違ったキョウナの仲間である。根出葉は叢生し，へら状長楕円形，ほとんど全縁でキョウナのように葉が裂け込まず，葉質はやや厚い。春，黄色の十字花 (いわゆる菜の花) を開く。特有の香気と辛みがあり，主として漬物にする。原産地は不明であるが，京都の壬生に古くから栽培されていたところからこの名があり，またミズナと呼ぶこともある。
