Line printer - Line printer

Line printer - Line printer

A type of computer output device that can print characters one line at a time on paper. It is also called a line printer. Currently, they have been replaced by bubble jet and laser printers that can easily output graphics, and have almost disappeared. There are two types of impact printers: impact printers that mechanically strike the type and paper with a hammer to print, and non-impact printers that do not use a hammer.

In the impact type, a type drum the same length as the width of the paper is rotated at high speed, and the paper is struck with an ink ribbon at the moment the character to be printed comes in front of the hammer. In this type, one set of type and one hammer are prepared for each column of printing positions. There is also a type where a chain with type set in it is rotated in front of the paper.

Non-impact methods include the photographic method, in which recording is done using light on photosensitive paper, the thermal recording method, in which writing is done using heat on thermal paper, and the method that uses discharge destruction paper, all of which contain color-producing substances.
