A river in the central part of the Korean Peninsula. It is 514.4 km long and has a drainage area of 26,279 square km, making it the third largest river after the Yalu River and the Nakdong River. The upper reaches of the river are made up of the Namhan River and the Bukhan River. The Namhan River originates from Odaesan in the Taebaek Mountains, turns northwest through Jeongseon, and merges with the Pyeongchang River near Yeongwol. It then turns northwest through Chungju and merges with the Bukhan River at Yangsu-ri, 120 km upstream from the mouth of the river. It flows through the center of Seoul, the capital of South Korea, then continues northwest, merging with the Imjin River and emptying into the Yellow Sea near Ganghwa Island. From its source to Pyeongchang, the river has a gradient of 7 in 200, and meanders through the Yeongseo Plateau, forming a canyon. The Bukhan River originates in Mount Kumgang in Gangwon Province and flows south, creating a wide eroded basin in its basin, joining the Soyang River near Chuncheon, before turning southwest and joining the main stream. The Han River's flow rate varies greatly seasonally, with low flow in January and February and high flow in July and August. Multipurpose dams have been built to conserve and utilize water resources. It serves as an artery for economic development, including the modernization and industrialization of Korea's agriculture.
