Athenian politician and soldier in the early 5th century BC. Date of birth and death unknown. Father of Pericles. Married the niece of reformer Cleisthenes, he was active in politics. In 489 BC, he impeached Miltiades, a hero of the Battle of Marathon, in an assembly and found him guilty, but in 484 BC he was ostracized. In 480 BC, he was given a general amnesty in response to the Persian army and returned to Greece. The following year he was chosen as a strategos (general) and led the Athenian navy in pursuit of the Persian army, winning the Battle of Mycale, and the following year capturing the Persian base of Sestos.
