A group activity among young people in rural areas and factories, and housewives, in which they write about their lives as they are, read their writings with their friends, and discuss new ways of living. It became popular in the 1950s and spread throughout the country. Its origins lie in the spelling education that elementary school teachers used from the Taisho period to the beginning of the Showa period to encourage students to look at the realities of their lives and express them. The tradition of the Life Spelling Movement, which was carried out around 1935 by young teachers in the Tohoku region in particular in resistance to the trends of state control and militarism, was carried on in the post-World War II movement with works such as "Yamabiko School" (Mujaku Seikyo) and "New Spelling Classroom" (Kokubu Ichitaro), and also had a major impact on the Life Record Movement.
