Kamo Wakeikazuchi no Mikoto (Kamo Wakeikazuchi no Mikoto)

Japanese: 可茂別雷命(賀茂別雷命) - かもわけいかずちのみこと

The deity worshipped at Kamo Wakeikazuchi Shrine (Kamigamo Shrine). According to Kamo legend, he was born when Tamayorihime married Ninuriya, who was washed up the Kamo River. The original form of Kamo faith can be seen in the Miare ritual, in which a god who descends on Mount Kifune prays for blessings to be brought to the Kamo River. "Miare" refers to the birth of a new god (in this case, the god of thunder). This ritual is the basis of Kamo legend, and Wakeikazuchi is the legendary name for this young god of thunder. 賀茂別雷神社(上賀茂社)の祭神。賀茂伝説によると玉依姫(比売)（たまよりひめ）が賀茂川に流れ来た丹塗矢（にぬりや）と婚して生んだ神だという。賀茂信仰の原始の姿は貴船の山に来臨する神が賀茂川に恵みの水をもたらすことを祈った御阿礼（みあれ）神事にうかがえる。〈ミアレ〉とは新しい神(この場合は雷神)の誕生をいう。賀茂伝説の基礎にはこの神事があり，ワケイカズチとは，この若い雷神の説話上の名称である。【武藤武美】
