In 1935, Ukichiro Nakaya of Hokkaido University succeeded in creating snow crystals artificially for the first time in a low-temperature laboratory, and subsequently discovered that the shape of a snow crystal is determined by the temperature of the atmosphere at the time it grows and the degree of water vapor supplied (degree of supersaturation). (The humidity inside the clouds in which snow crystals grow exceeds 100% (saturation state). This state is called supersaturation, and the degree of supersaturation is expressed.)
