… Near the middle of the 19th century, British mineralogist WH Miller established a notation for crystal systems and face indices based on symmetry (1839), and Frenchman A. Bravais completed the classification of space lattices by symmetry (1850). However, the difference between the heliomorphic and hemimorphic crystal families, which had already been known since Weiss's time, required the study of the symmetry of the crystal building blocks themselves, which are arranged according to the framework of the space lattice. German physicist L. Sohncke provided a partial answer to the symmetrical relationship between the space lattice and the building blocks, but at the end of the 19th century, the complete answer was given by the space group theory, which was independently constructed by three men: E.S.Fedorov of Russia, A.M.Schönflies of Germany, and W.Barlow of England, and thus classical crystallography was completed.
