Delirium tremens occurs after the sudden cessation of drinking, when consciousness becomes clouded and the patient experiences delirium accompanied by hallucinations of small animals such as insects and mice, and multiple conversational auditory hallucinations. Sometimes, there may be increased suggestibility, the Liebmann phenomenon in which visual hallucinations occur when the eyeballs are pressed, and occupational delirium in which the patient performs movements as if they are performing a familiar task.
