A city in northern Chiba Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. It occupies the northern part of the Shimousa Plateau and the lowlands on the south bank of the Tone River, with the Tone River flowing east along the northern border and Inbanuma Lake on the western border. The city center developed as a temple town for Naritasan Shinshoji Temple since the Middle Ages. The Narita Line was opened in 1897, and the Keisei Main Line in 1926, and the city developed further, but the surrounding area was rural. The opening of the New Tokyo International Airport (now Narita International Airport), Japan's air gateway, in Sanrizuka in 1978 brought about major changes in the city. Large housing complexes such as Narita New Town in the west and the expansion of various industries have rapidly increased, and in 1983 the Higashi-Kanto Expressway was opened to Ichikawa, and in 2015 the Ken-O Expressway was extended to Daiei JCT. Agriculture has also been rapidly changing to a suburban type with the area of cultivated land being consolidated. The Sogo Reido Hall, dedicated to Sogoro Sakura, is a famous cherry blossom viewing spot. In March 2006, the towns of Daiei and Shimousa in Katori County were incorporated. The city sustained damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake. Area: 213.84 km2 . Population: 128,933 (2010). Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
