Ushijima
An island in the Shiwaku Islands located about 8 km north of Marugame Port in Marugame City, Kagawa Prefecture. Its area is about 0.84 square kilometers. It is used for aquaculture of seaweed and citrus cultivation. During the Edo period, it was the home base of Maruo Gozaemon, a wealthy merchant who was also known as the "King of the Inland Sea" and a shipping company that dominated the Seto Inland Sea. 香川県丸亀市、丸亀港の北約8キロメートルに位置する塩飽諸島の島。面積約0.84平方キロメートル。ノリなどの養殖漁業と柑橘類の栽培が行われる。江戸時代には瀬戸内海を席巻した廻船業者で“内海の海上王”とも称される豪商、丸尾五左衛門の本拠地で、家屋敷跡と石垣が残る。
