Kabanori - Kabanori

A seaweed of the red algae family, Gracilaria family. It has a soft, leathery, flattened thallus, with the leaflets repeatedly branching out and spreading out like Fatsia leaves, sometimes with small leaflets on the side edges. The body color varies widely, from yellowish to blackish purple, and it is up to 30 centimeters in size. It is a warm-water plant, and is commonly found in shallow seas throughout Japan from spring to summer. It is used as a secondary ingredient in agar production, and as a garnish for sashimi.

紅藻植物、オゴノリ科の海藻。柔らかい革膜質の扁平(へんぺい)葉状体で、葉片は叉状(さじょう)分岐を繰り返して、ややヤツデ葉状に広がり、ときに側縁に小葉片をつける。体色が黄色がかるもの、黒紫色がかるものなど変化が多く、大きさは30センチメートル以内。温海性で、日本の各所の浅海に春から夏にかけてよくみられる。寒天製造の副原料のほか、刺身のつまにも利用される。
