A temple of the Nanzenji school of the Rinzai sect in Sakyo Ward, Kyoto City. Its mountain name is Zuiganzan. In 1601 (6th year of the Keicho era), Tokugawa Ieyasu invited the Zen monk Genkitsu Kanshitsu from the Ashikaga School to Fushimi, where he built a school called Enkoji. This marked the founding of the temple, and Ieyasu, who loved learning, donated 100,000 woodblock type characters, while Genkitsu published Japanese and Chinese classics. These are called the Keicho type edition, Fushimi edition, and Enkoji edition, and the temple played a noteworthy role in the history of Japanese publishing. The temple was later moved to its current location, and is now a nunnery. [Fujii Manabu] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
