A type of cupboard. Since board was used as a synonym for table, cupboard means a table on which to place cups. Originally, it was just a stand with table-like legs and a drawer, on which cups and plates were displayed. Later, it became a cupboard with a glass door on top, or a cupboard with doors all over it. 食器戸棚の一種。 boardはテーブルの同義語として使われていたので cupboardとはカップを置くテーブルの意味。もとはテーブル状の脚のついた台に引出しがついた程度のもので,上にカップや皿を飾るようになっていた。のちに上部がガラス戸の入った戸棚になったり,全体に扉のついた食器棚などに変った。
