During World War II, Stephen Bosustow, John Hubley, Robert Cannon, and Ernest Pintoff rebelled against Disney Productions and formed their own production company, UPA. In contrast to Disney's "full animation," Robert Cannon's "Gerald McBoingboing" (1951-56), which used a technique called "limited animation" that consciously reduced the number of moving images, and John Hubley's "Moonbird" (1958), which exuded poetry in graphic art, succeeded in developing a quality of drawing and movement that was different from conventional animation. ...
