Yoshino River

Japanese: 吉野川 - よしのがわ
Yoshino River
A river that flows east through the center of Shikoku. It is commonly called Shikoku Saburo. Its total length is 194 km. It originates on the southern slope of the Ishizuchi Mountains, which occupies the center of the Shikoku Mountains, and flows east. It changes course north near the border between Kochi and Tokushima prefectures, and becomes a horizontal valley that crosses the Shikoku Mountains, forming the Oboke and Koboke gorges. It combines the Dozan River and the Iya River tributaries, flows east again, flows in a vertical valley along the Median Tectonic Line that forms the northern edge of the Shikoku Mountains, and empties into the Kii Channel in Tokushima City. It is the longest river in Shikoku, and its drainage basin covers four prefectures in Shikoku. In the upper reaches, it forms a deep gorge, and many dams have been built, making it a power source area for Shikoku. It has played an important role as a transportation route connecting the north and south of Shikoku since ancient times. Downstream from Ikeda in Miyoshi City is the Tokushima Plain, and the long, narrow valley bottom plain is mainly used for farming. The delta at the mouth of the river contains many new rice fields that were developed during the Edo period and is blessed with abundant water and groundwater, part of which forms the Tokushima Industrial District.

Yoshino River

A river that runs through central Nara Prefecture. It is 81 km long. It originates near Mt. Odaigahara, meanders and incises as it flows northwest, then flows west through the valley of the Median Tectonic Line near Yoshino Town, and enters Wakayama Prefecture, where it becomes the Kino River. Near Shimoichi Town and Gojo City, it forms two river terraces, with rice fields and settlements developed on the lower level. The upper reaches are a habitat for sweetfish, and the surrounding area is a production area for Yoshino cedar, where forestry is practiced. As part of the Yoshino-Kumano Comprehensive Development, Tsuburo Dam and other dams were constructed upstream, and there are many power plants.
