Nereus - Nereus (English spelling)

The sea god in Greek mythology. Son of Gaia. In Homer, he is called the "Old Man of the Sea." He had a gentle and friendly personality, prophetic powers, and could change his form at will. When Hercules, who was asked for the golden apples of the Hesperides (his 11th labor), tried to get Nereus to show him the way to the land of the Hesperides, Nereus tried to escape by changing his form in various ways. However, Hercules would not let him go, so Nereus finally showed him the way. Unlike Poseidon, the chief god of the sea, Nereus, who represents the calm sea, lives in an underwater palace with his 50 daughters, the Nereids.

ギリシア神話の海神。ガイアの子。ホメロスでは「海の老人」とよばれている。温和な親しみやすい性格で、しかも預言力をもち、また自由にその姿を変えることができた。ヘスペリデスの黄金のリンゴを求められたヘラクレスが（第11番目の功業）、ヘスペリデスの国への道をネレウスに教えさせようとしたとき、ネレウスは姿をさまざまに変えて逃れようとした。しかしヘラクレスがどうしても離そうとしないので、ネレウスはついにその道を教えてやったという。海の主神ポセイドンとは異なり、穏やかな日和(ひより)の海を表すネレウスは、50人の娘たちネレイスとともに海底の宮殿で暮らしている。
