...The ecology of the Japanese bitterling is characterized by the fact that it spawns in the fall, and the eggs laid inside the shellfish hatch in the gill lobes, overwinter while developing, and the larvae swim out into the water around May of the following spring. There are two other bitterling species that spawn in the fall: A. rhombea and Pseudoperilampus typus . Of these, the Pseudoperilampus typus is also considered to be one of the fish species that is experiencing a significant decline.
