Japan Kodokai - Japan Kodokai

An educational organization established in the Meiji period. It was established in September 1887 (Meiji 20) by renaming the Nippon Kodokai. Its predecessor, the Nippon Kodokai (established in 1884), also originated from the Tokyo Shushin Gakusha, which was founded in 1876 by Nishimura Shigeki to promote morality. It published the journal Kodokai Magazine and advocated nationalistic morality. In Nishimura's "A word on the renaming of the Nippon Kodokai," he laments the trend of degrading morality, establishes the foundation of morality, and says, "I wish to correct people's hearts, stop false teachings, and thus solidify the foundation of the nation." However, he believes that there is no teaching unique to Japan, and that it is necessary to take from the East and the West, and that the good points of Eastern and Western morality should be absorbed.

明治時代設立の教化団体。1887年（明治20）9月、日本講道会を改称してできたもの。前身の日本講道会（1884年結成）も、西村茂樹(しげき)が1876年に道徳振興を唱えて設立した東京修身学社に発する。機関誌『弘道会雑誌』を刊行し、国家主義道徳を主張した。西村の「日本弘道会ノ改称ニ付キテ一言ス」をみれば、道徳を卑しむ風潮を嘆き、道徳の根基を定め、「人心ヲ正シ邪説ヲ遏(とど)メ、以(もっ)テ国基ヲ鞏固(きょうこ)ニセント欲ス」とある。ただし道徳の内容については、日本固有の教えはなく、東洋や西洋からとらざるをえないとし、東西の道徳の長所を吸収することを主張している。
