… Sicily [Literature] It is common to assume that nascent or infancy Italian literature is the product of immature thought or poetic style because of its crude slang, but it must be emphasized that this is completely wrong when it comes to the "Sicilian School" poets. If they had been a literary group with such a low intellectual level, it would not have been possible for Giacomo da Lentini (?-1250) to have invented the eternal poetic form, the sonnet. In fact, Federico II is said to have been fluent in Greek, Latin, Italian slang, as well as French, German, and Arabic languages.
