A literati official in the late Heian period. The great-grandson of Masahira. The son of Shigehira. His mother was the daughter of Tachibana Takachika. He was called Gotaifukei and Gototoku. He was praised for his genius from an early age, and after passing the Kohei 1st year exam in 1058 (Kohei 1), he served as the Crown Prince's Scholar, Kurodo, Mimasaka no Kami, Left Chief Examiner, and Shikibu Daibu (Minister of State) to Prince Takahito (Emperor Gosanjo) and Prince Sadahito (Emperor Shirakawa), and in 1088 (Kanji 2) he became a Sangi (councillor), then Gon Chunagon (provisional middle counselor), and was twice appointed Dazai no Gon no Sotsu (commander of the Dazai) and eventually became Shonii Daizakyo (senior second rank) Daizakyo (final councilor of the Treasury). He died on November 5th, 2nd year of Ten'ei (Ten'ei 2). He became a close aide to Emperor Gosanjo and was a bureaucrat deeply involved in the Shirakawa Insei government as a trusted aide to the Emperor, and was also a leading scholar of his time, symbolized by the three generations of samurai readers, Gosanjo, Shirakawa, and Horikawa. He also wrote a wide range of works, including the Gokeshidai, a book on court etiquette and customs, on the bureaucratic side. His literary writings were also wide-ranging, and in addition to orthodox poetry and prose such as poems, prefaces to poems, and prayers, which are collected in such works as "Honcho Untitled Poems," "Chuuyuuki Burui Shihai Chinese Poetry Collection," "Honcho Continued Monzui," and "Jiangdu Commander's Prayer Form Collection," he also wrote works based on worldly anecdotes, such as "The Courtesan Record," "The Puppet Record," "The Record of Luoyang Dengaku," and "The Record of Coddling Foxes," as well as the collection of stories "Jiangdansho," which is a written record of his speeches, and he also compiled "The Continued Record of Honcho Ojou-den" and "Honcho Shinsen-den." He also wrote the poetry collection "Goushuishu," and many of his works are included in imperially commissioned anthologies following "Goshui Wakashu."
