Canlan (Cold orchid) - Canlan

A perennial plant of the orchid family (APG classification: Orchidaceae). A type of oriental orchid. The leaves are slender, 50 cm long, dark green, glossy and leathery. The linear leaves grow straight up, and the tips are flexibly curved. The flower stalk grows in clusters between the leaves from November to January of the following year, reaching 40 to 50 cm, and produces 5 to 12 flowers in a cluster. The flowers are fragrant, 5 to 6 cm in diameter, and have reddish-brown stripes. The thin, pointed outer petals spread out, and the inner petals protrude. The ligule is three-lobed, and the anterior lobe curves backward from the bottom. It grows wild from the southern part of the Chubu region of Honshu to Okinawa, but is becoming less common. Horticultural varieties include Gekko, which has sandy spots scattered on the ligule, Sekko, which has a white border, Hiragasane, as well as Nankoku and Orizuru. Repotting should be done in April, May or October.

ラン科（APG分類：ラン科）の多年草。東洋ランの1種。葉は細長く50センチメートル、濃緑色で表面は光沢があり革質。線状葉は直上し、先端はしなやかに屈曲する。花茎は11月から翌年の1月ころ、葉間から束生し40～50センチメートルとなり、5～12個の花を総状につける。花は芳香があり、花径5～6センチメートルで赤褐色の条斑(じょうはん)がある。細くとがった外弁は開出し、内弁は突き出る。舌弁は3裂し、前裂片は下方より後方に反り返る。本州の中部地方南部から沖縄に自生するが、少なくなっている。園芸品種としては、舌弁に砂状の斑点が散在する月光や、白色で覆輪の雪光(せっこう)、平重(ひらがさね)などのほか、南国(なんごく)、折鶴(おりづる)などもある。植え替えは4、5月か10月ころにする。
