...From the end of the Heian period through the Middle Ages, peasants who fled to resist the lawlessness and tyranny of their feudal lords would actually hide in the forests, and the forests were also places where fugitive servants and retainers could seek refuge. In the Sengoku period, the word "forest" itself came to mean the act of seeking refuge in a temple as an asylum, as in "I'm going to the forest at Enmei-ji Temple," "The villains and others run in, calling themselves the forest," and "Women's forest." In addition, peasants would hang bamboo from their houses and fields, calling them "no-entry forests," and prevent the feudal lords from entering. In this way, temples and sacred places that had the character of an asylum were also called "forests." In the early modern period, the phrase "go to the forests" gradually changed from "climb the mountain" to "climb the mountain" to "climb the mountain."...

…平安末期から中世を通じて,領主の非法,横暴に抵抗して逃散(ちようさん)する百姓たちは,〈山林に交わる〉〈山野に交わる〉といって実際に山林にこもっており,山林は逃亡する下人・所従の駆け入る場でもあった。戦国時代になると〈延命寺へ山林申候〉〈悪党以下,山林と号して走り入る〉〈女山林〉などのように,〈山林〉という語それ自体が,アジール的な寺院へ駆けこむ行為を意味するようになるとともに,百姓たちが家や田畠に篠(ささ)を懸け,そこを〈山林不入の地と号し〉,領主が立ち入れないようにしたことから見て,アジールとしての性格を持つ寺院や聖域そのものも〈山林〉といわれたのである。近世になると〈山林に交わる〉という言葉はしだいに,〈山に上る〉〈山に登る〉から〈山上り〉という表現になっていく。…
