Another name for Old English (OE). A variety of Low German dialects brought by Germanic tribes Jutes, Angles, and Saxons who migrated to England in large numbers from continental Europe, especially from the Jutland Peninsula and the lower Elbe region, from the mid-5th century onwards. They overpowered the languages of the indigenous Celtic peoples and became the main language of England. The period in the history of English that is called Classical is up until the end of the 11th century. Depending on the area where each tribe settled, it is divided into four dialects: Kentish (Jute) in the southeast, West Saxon in the southwest, Mercian (Angle) in the middle, and Northumbrian (Angle) in the north.
