Square Play - Kadomaru no Shibai

...It is located at the eastern end of Dotonbori, almost on the site of the old Toyotakeza, but before the war, there was a theater of the same name a few dozen meters west of its current location. The former Asahiza was the successor to the Kakumaru Theater, which had been running since the Edo period, and was renamed in 1877. It was counted as one of the five theaters in Dotonbori, and is known for being the home base of the so-called second Seibi-dan, led by Kitamura Rokuro, in the late Meiji period, and for laying the foundations of Shinpa theater. It was also the first base for Shochiku's expansion into Osaka, and from the mid-Taisho period onwards it continued to exist as a movie premiere theater until it was damaged by war. ...

…道頓堀の東端でほぼ昔の豊竹座の跡に位置するが，戦災前には現在地より数十m西に同名の劇場があった。この旧朝日座は江戸時代から続いた角丸の芝居の後身で1877年に改称，道頓堀五座の一つに数えられ明治後期に喜多村緑郎を中心とする，いわゆる第2次成美団が本拠地として活躍，新派劇の基礎を築いたことで知られる。また松竹の大阪進出の最初の拠点ともなったが，大正中期以降は映画の封切館として戦災を受けるまで存続した。…
