French Pacific explorer. Joined the navy in 1756, participated in the Seven Years' War, and served in the American Revolutionary War from 1776 to 1778. In 1785, ordered by King Louis XVI to discover the Northwest Passage from the Pacific coast and explore the Pacific Ocean, he set sail from the port of Brest in France. He circumnavigated South America, sailed north from Hawaii to Alaska, then traveled south along the North American coast to California, then crossed the Pacific Ocean and entered Macau in 1787. He then sailed north again to the Tsushima Strait, the Sea of Japan, and the Mamiya Strait, before passing through the Strait of La Pérouse (Sōya Strait) and reaching Kamchatka.

フランスの太平洋探検家。1756年海軍に入り，七年戦争に参加，76‐78年アメリカ独立革命に遠征した。85年ルイ16世に太平洋側からの北西航路の発見と太平洋調査を命ぜられ，フランスのブレスト港を出帆した。南アメリカ大陸を周航し，ハワイからアラスカまで北上後，北米沿岸をカリフォルニアまで南下し，ついで太平洋を横断して87年マカオに入った。再び北上して対馬海峡，日本海，間宮海峡まで行ったのち，ラ･ペルーズ海峡(宗谷海峡)を通過してカムチャツカに達した。
