Assen - Mediation (English spelling) Assen

The capital of the province of Drenthe in the northeast of the Netherlands. Population 59,006 (2001). It is the administrative centre of the province and a transport hub connected by canals to Groningen in the north, Meppel in the south, and the Wadden Sea in the west. Its main industries are light manufacturing (printing, clothing, etc.) and tourism. It was formed around a nunnery in the Middle Ages and became a city in 1257. It was occupied by German troops during World War II, and the town's full development only began after the war. Peat bogs remain on the outskirts, and there are many ruins, including Neolithic megalithic tombs and a huge cave mentioned by the Roman historian Tacitus. Prehistoric and ancient artifacts discovered at these ruins are on display at the city's museum. To the south of the town is a circuit where the motorcycle world championships are held.

オランダ北東部、ドレンテ州の州都。人口5万9006（2001）。同州の行政中心であり、また運河によって北のフローニンゲンや南のメッペル、さらに西のワッデン海とも結ばれる交通中心でもある。産業は印刷、衣類などの軽工業と観光が中心。中世に尼僧院を中心に形成され、1257年に都市となった。第二次世界大戦中はドイツ軍によって占領され、町の本格的な発展は戦後になってからである。郊外には泥炭地が残存し、新石器時代の巨石墳墓やローマの歴史家タキトゥスが言及した巨大な洞窟(どうくつ)など遺跡が多い。市内の博物館にはこうした遺跡で発見された先史、古代の遺物が展示されている。町の南にはオートバイの世界選手権が行われるサーキットがある。
