Chief of the Murong tribe of the Xianbei people. His courtesy name was Yiluo Kai. He was from Jicheng, Changli County (Jinzhou, Liaoning Province). The Murong tribe served the Wei and Jin dynasties for generations and were influenced by Chinese culture. Murong Wei fought against his fellow tribesmen, the Yuwen and Duan tribes, as well as Buyeo and Goguryeo, and conquered the Liaodong region. He also sheltered and protected the Han Chinese refugees who had fled during the Yongjia Rebellion, and established the foundations of the later Yan (Former Yan) by promoting learning with the Han Chinese scholar-officials as advisors. He was given the title of Commander in Chief of the Liao Left Miscellaneous Exiles' Military Affairs by the Eastern Jin Dynasty, and requested the title of King of Yan, but he died of illness before the court council could reach a decision.

鮮卑族慕容部の族長。字は弈洛瓌（えきらくかい）。昌黎郡棘城（きよくじよう）(遼寧省錦州)の人。慕容部は代々魏･晋王朝に臣属して中国文化の影響を受けた。慕容廆は同族の宇文部･段部あるいは扶余，高句麗と戦って遼東地方を制覇した。また永嘉の乱による漢族流亡集団を収容･保護し，漢族士大夫を顧問として学問を興すなどのちの燕(前燕)の基礎をきずいた。東晋から都督遼左雑夷流人諸軍事などの官爵を受け，さらに燕王の称号を要求したが，朝議が決しないうちに病没した。
