Of the three periods, the Early Period (c. 2000-1500 BC), the Middle Period (c. 1500-1000 BC), and the Late Period (c. 1000-612 BC), it was during the Late Period, also known as Neo-Assyrian art, that the characteristics of Assyrian art were established as the empire grew in power. Ruins of palace buildings made of sun-dried and baked bricks remain in Ashur, Nimrud, Khorsabad, and Nineveh. Following the Mesopotamian tradition, Assyria was characterized by its reliefs, which favored themes that demonstrate royal power and the military might of the empire, such as battles, hunting, and processions of tributes. Hunting scenes by King Ashurbanipal (c. 650 BC) feature sharp, realistic depictions. Reliefs made of glazed bricks are also unique to Assyria.
