Tripura (state)

A state in northeastern India. Located at the northwestern end of the Arakan mountain range, it is surrounded on three sides by Bangladesh except for the east. Its area is 10,500 km2 and its population is 2.76 million (1991). Its capital is Agartala. The western edge of the state is a plain less than 50m above sea level, belonging to the Ganga-Brahmaputra delta, but from the center to the east, low hills less than 600m above sea level run parallel from north to south. In the plains and valley bottom plains, rice, jute, sugarcane, cotton, and rapeseed are cultivated in paddy fields and permanent fields, but in the hills, Tibeto-Burman peoples practice slash-and-burn agriculture.

インド北東部の州。アラカン山系北西端に位置し，東を除く三方をバングラデシュに囲まれている。面積1万0500km2，人口276万(1991)。州都はアガルタラAgartala。西端部はガンガー(ガンジス)･ブラフマプトラ三角州に属し標高50mに満たない平原であるが，中央部以東は標高600m以下の低い丘陵が南北に並走する。平原と谷底平野では水田や常畑で米，ジュート，サトウキビ，綿花，菜種が栽培されるが，丘陵ではチベット･ビルマ語系諸族が焼畑農業を営んでいる。
