Police station - Chuzaisho

A police station is a subordinate organization of a police station, and is the base of operations for local police officers (uniformed police officers). Unlike police boxes, they have residential facilities attached, and in principle, one police officer lives and works there. The jurisdiction of each police station is divided into districts under the jurisdiction of either a police box or a police station, and police stations are located outside urban areas. Police officers working at police stations are primarily responsible for patrolling within their district and making rounds to contact homes and businesses. They understand the local situation and the needs of the residents, and respond to the needs of the local residents, while ensuring the safety of the area by responding immediately to various police incidents. Police stations are used to receive various inquiries from people who come to the station, and to report lost property and found items, but police officers are not present during patrols or rounds. For this reason, family members who live with the police officers are responsible for making contact, and police station compensation is paid to the family members. Police stations were invented in Japan to respond to police incidents in towns and villages far from police stations, and were established throughout the country based on the "General Rules for the Placement and Duties of Police Officers" enacted in 1888 (Meiji 21). As of April 2009 (Heisei 21), there were approximately 6,900 police stations in operation.
