A village in Kita District, southern Ehime Prefecture. Population 1,458 (1995). Located in the upper reaches of the Kawabe River, a tributary of the Hiji River, it is a typical valley-type mountain village, located in mountainous terrain that is part of the Shikoku Mountains. There is little flat land, and 40 settlements are scattered across the mountainside. It was established in 1951 by separating from Hijikawa Village (now Hijikawa Town). Agriculture and forestry are the main industries, and the area produces a lot of chestnuts, shiitake mushrooms, and tobacco. Silkworm farming and Japanese cattle breeding are also carried out. The Kawabe River valley is suitable for hiking and fishing, and freshwater fish are farmed in the clear streams. [Ueda Masako] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
