Style - yōshiki (English spelling) style English

This word refers to a method of artistic expression, but is generally used to describe the behavior, lifestyle, and formation of an individual, society, or nation. The foreign word translated as style comes from the Latin stilus, which originally meant a way of writing or literary style. Its usage gradually expanded, and in the 18th century it was adopted by the German Winckelmann into the field of art history, where it came to be applied as a method of artistic expression. It was later taken up in Goethe's art theory and Schelling's aesthetics, and in the second half of the 19th century it was used by Riegl, Wölfflin, and others as a powerful concept for developing methodologies in building the foundations of art history.

Artistic expression can be categorized into different types; in the case of fine art, there are personal styles that are based on the expressive style of individual artists (architects, painters, sculptors, craftsmen, etc.), period styles that are based on an expressive style that generalizes a particular era, ethnic styles that are based on an expressive style shared by a certain ethnic group, local styles that are seen in a certain limited region, and school styles that are seen when a group of artists have a different expressive style from others, even if they belong to the same era, ethnicity, and region.

To properly understand a work of art, one must first grasp its mode of expression, that is, its style. This is because style is the clearest projection of an artist's personality, or the spirit of the times, in the case of an era. The style of an era is not formed vaguely over historical developments, but is a new style, or personal style, that a leading genius artist of the era uses as a basis the styles that played a leading role in the same era and in the past to express what is appropriate for the new era, and the same can be said for the style of a school or a local style. Also, style and form are often confused, but form is merely one of the factors that form a style, and the two have completely different meanings.

このことばは芸術的表現の方式をさすが、一般に個々の人間や社会あるいは民族の行動・生活の仕方や、形成の方式に使われることがある。様式と訳した外国語の語源はラテン語のスティルスstilusであり、これはもともと文章の書き方、あるいは文体を意味するものであった。それが用法としてしだいに拡大され、18世紀にはドイツのウィンケルマンによって美術史の領域に取り入れられ、美術的表現の方式として適用されるようになる。その後、ゲーテの芸術論やシェリングの美学にも取り上げられ、19世紀後半にはリーグル、ウェルフリンらによって、美術史学の基礎を築くうえで方法論を展開するための、有力な概念として用いられるようになった。

　芸術的表現は類型的に分化されるが、美術についていえば、美術家（建築家、画家、彫刻家、工芸家など）個々の表現方式による個人様式、特定の時代を総括した表現方式を基礎にした時代様式、同じく民族の共有する表現方式による民族様式、ある限定された地方にみられる地方様式、時代・民族・地域は同一でも、美術家の集団として他と異なる表現方式をもつときにみられる流派様式などがある。

　芸術作品を正しく理解するためには、まず初めにその表現方式、つまり様式を把握しなければならない。なぜならば、美術家の場合ではその人格が、時代であるならばその時代精神が、もっとも明らかに投影されたのが様式であるからである。時代様式は歴史的な展開のうえに漠然と形成されるものでなく、時代を指導する天才的美術家が、同時代および過去において指導的役割を果たした様式を基盤にして、新しい時代にふさわしいものを表現する新しい様式、つまり個人の様式に帰するものであり、流派の様式にしても、地方の様式にしても、だいたい同じことがいえる。また、様式と形式とは一般に混同されて用いられている場合があるが、形式はあくまで様式を形成する要因の一つであり、両者の意味はまったく異なる。
