A fish of the genus Salvelinus (illustration) of the family Salmonidae. Native to Canada and the east coast of northern North America, it was first imported to Japan in 1901 to a fish farm in Lake Chuzenji in Nikko, and was once transplanted to fish farms, rivers, and lakes throughout the country. It was later replaced by rainbow trout farming, but it is still bred in Lake Yuno and River Yunokawa in Tochigi Prefecture and the Azusa River in Nagano Prefecture. It prefers slightly cooler water than rainbow trout. Its body is pale green-blue, with scattered crimson spots on the sides slightly smaller than the diameter of its pupil.
