A type of longitudinal wave. When pressure is applied to a part of an object such as an elastic body or a fluid, a local density change occurs, which becomes a wave that travels through the object. It is named after the alternating sparse and dense areas. Sound waves and earthquake P waves are examples of this, and are also called compression waves.
