French analytical chemist. After apprenticing at a pharmacy in Rouen, he went to Paris, where he was recognized by Fourcroy and became his assistant. He served as a professor of chemistry at the School of Mines and the Natural History Museum, and in 1811 succeeded Fourcroy as a professor at the School of Medicine. He excelled as an experimentalist, and in 1797 he discovered chromium from croixite from Siberia, and succeeded in isolating it the following year in 1798. He also discovered beryllium from beryl in the same year (isolated in 1828 by Wöhler and Antoine AB Bussy (1794-1882)). In organic matter, he discovered asparagine (1805), conducted research on malic acid and quinic acid, and analyzed bones, brains, and blood.
