...The Republican Party was born in 1870, and in 1871 a law was issued granting freedom to newborn slaves. From this time until 1889, the emperor frequently traveled to Europe and America, and Princess Isabella served as regent several times, and in 1888 the law on the emancipation of all slaves was approved by her signature. The liberal emperor was sympathetic to republican ideas and opposed slavery, but the dissatisfied plantation class and the already hostile church turned against him, leaving the empire without two of its main pillars. In 1889, the empire was overthrown in a bloodless coup led by Fonseca.
