A distinguished family among the German princes. Beginning with Welf I, King of Burgundy, father-in-law of Louis the Pious, Welf IV held the Duchy of Bavaria. Under Henry the Proud, he also held the Duchy of Saxony. Henry the Lion lost to the Hohenstaufen Emperor Frederick I (Redbeard), and lost the Duchy of Saxony. His son Otto IV was elected emperor, but performed poorly, and the territory was reduced, leading to a decisive split in 1634. The Duchy of Brunswick-Lüneburg, which arose from the territory of Lower Saxony, gained the status of Elector of Hanover in 1692.

ドイツ諸侯中の名門。ルートウィヒ1世 (敬虔王) の舅ブルグンド王ウェルフ1世に始り，ウェルフ4世にいたってバイエルン公国を領した。ハインリヒ傲慢公のときザクセン公国を併領。ハインリヒ獅子公にいたって，ホーエンシュタウフェン家の皇帝フリードリヒ1世 (赤髯王)と争って敗れ，ザクセン公国を失った。その子オットー4世は皇帝に選出されたがふるわず，領土も縮小され 1634年決定的に分裂。なお下ザクセンの領地から生じたブラウンシュワイク＝リューネブルク公国は，92年ハノーバー選帝侯の地位を得るにいたった。
