Kawanori (river moss) - Prasiola japonica Yatabe

Japanese: カワノリ(川苔) - カワノリ（英語表記）Prasiola japonica Yatabe

A beautiful green leaf-like edible green alga of the family Polyporidaceae that grows in mountain streams. The thin thallus is bright green, 1-15 cm in size and 0.5-4 cm in width. Like the marine green algae Hinodegusa, its body consists of a single layer of cells, but whereas Hinodegusa's chloroplasts are plate-shaped or membranous, Kawanori's chloroplasts are stellate. In addition to sexual reproduction by fertilization of eggs and sperm, Kawanori also reproduces asexually by forming single spores. It grows on rocks in clean water upstream of rivers that flow into the Pacific coast south of Fukushima Prefecture.

山地の渓流に生育し，食用とする美しい緑色をした葉状のカワノリ科の緑藻。薄い葉状体は鮮緑色で，大きさ1～15cm，幅0.5～4cmになる。海産緑藻のヒトエグサと同じように，体は1層の細胞からなるが，ヒトエグサの葉緑体が板状ないし膜状であるのに対し，カワノリの葉緑体は星状である。卵と精子の受精による有性生殖を行うほかに，単胞子形成による無性生殖も行う。福島県以南の太平洋沿岸に注ぐ河川の上流の，きれいな水の流れるところの岩上に生育する。
