…In 1916, H. Winterhoff of the American company Leedy noticed that steel soundboards have a longer reverberation than wooden ones, and invented an instrument in which tuned steel keys were arranged like a xylophone and the amplitude of the vibrations was changed. At the time, the instrument only had two rows of resonating tubes arranged under the soundboard that could be moved up and down alternately, but it was later improved by J.C. Deagan into the instrument we know today. This instrument has small rotating disks attached to the top of each resonating tube attached under the aluminum alloy soundboard, and by rotating these with a motor, the resonating tubes open and close, causing the sound to fluctuate. …
