Sex-limited race

Japanese: 限性品種 - げんせいひんしゅ（英語表記）sex‐limited race

A breed created using sex-limited inheritance to make it easier to distinguish between males and females. In many animals and plants that reproduce sexually, one sex or the other has heterozygous (XY) sex chromosomes. In this case, a dominant gene on the Y chromosome is expressed sex-limited only in the sex that has the Y chromosome, unless there is a dominant synonymous gene on another chromosome (sex-limited inheritance). Taking advantage of this property, genes for easily identifiable traits are translocated from an autosome to the Y chromosome, improving practical traits to create sex-limited breeds. The first sex-limited breed was created in 1941 by a Japanese person using silkworms.

雌雄の鑑別を容易にするために限性遺伝を利用して作られた品種。両性生殖をする多くの動植物では，雌雄どちらかの性がヘテロ型(XY)の性染色体をもつ。この場合，Y染色体上の優性遺伝子は，他の染色体に優性の同義遺伝子がないかぎり，Y染色体をもつ性にのみ限性的に発現する(限性遺伝)。この性質を利用して，識別しやすい形質の遺伝子を常染色体からY染色体に転座させ，実用形質を改良したものが限性品種で，1941年に日本人によってカイコで作られたのが最初である。
