A province in southeastern Canada facing the Gulf of St. Lawrence to the east and the Bay of Fundy to the south. The northwest is mountainous, but the province is mostly hilly lowland. Forestry and forest product processing are the main industries, with many pulp, paper, and lumber factories. Cod is the main fishing industry. Potato and pasture cultivation are the main agricultural products. Minerals include lead, copper, and oil. Settled by S. Champlain in 1604, it became a British colony in 1713. It became a province in 1784 and joined the Canadian Confederation in 1867. The provincial capital is Fredericton. Many of the residents are of French descent. Area: 71,450 km2 .
