Stefan Lochner

Stefan Lochner

German painter, believed to have been born in Meersburg on Lake Constance. He lived in Cologne from 1430, and ended his life there as a city councillor. He is a representative of the delicate and elegant Cologne School of painting, and is the only painter of this school whose name is still known. His field of expression is wide, ranging from the miniature paintings of the Darmstadt Prayer Book to the great altarpiece that adorns the Cologne Dome. The techniques of the Cologne School were originally modern, influenced by Flemish painting, but at the same time they were characterized by the expression of pious religious emotion, as symbolized by the face of the Virgin Mary, described as "as fresh as a bud". In his case, too, the vivid facial expressions and precise depiction of details are due to Flemish influence, but he also expresses religious emotions that could be described as mystical, such as in his masterpiece ``Madonna of the Rose Hedge'' (Wallraf-Richartz Museum, Cologne), which shows the Virgin Mary and angels exuding deep spiritual peace.
