A general term for pottery patterns made with twisted cord (rope). The most common method is to rotate the rope itself on the surface of the pottery, but there are other methods, such as pressing the sides or ends of the rope, or rotating or pressing a tangled body of rope wrapped around a round rod. A special development was seen in Japanese Stone Age pottery, which gave rise to the names Jomon pottery and Jomon period. Depending on the era and region, there are styles in which Jomon is not used at all, but generally speaking, eastern Japan has a strong tradition of using Jomon, which was inherited in Yayoi pottery.
