...This period also saw the replacement of old and new noble families and the rise of foreign (especially German) noble families, which was the "period of division" in Polish history, and the rivalry and competition between the princes made their rise possible. However, when Poland was reunited in the 14th century, the szlachta status was closed, and only those of szlachta origin were recognized (Kazimierz Code). Whether or not someone was of szlachta origin was determined by the testimony of their family (so much importance was placed on family ties), which on the one hand made it possible to obtain status through false testimony, but on the other hand further strengthened the family ties of the szlachta.
