…The personal union of Poland and Lithuania quickly bore fruit in the form of a victory over the Teutonic Knights in 1410 (Battle of Grunwald). As a result of the Thirteen Years' War (1454-66) fought under Kazimierz Jagiellończyk (1427-92) against the Teutonic Knights, the Kingdom of Poland, which placed the East Pomeranian region, including Gdansk, under its protection as Royal Prussia, experienced an unprecedented period of prosperity by transporting large quantities of rye to Gdansk via the Vistula River and selling it to Dutch and English merchants. The main players in this period were the szlachta.
