...During the reign of the Hosokawa clan, the area around Yatsushiro Castle was reclaimed by the Matsui clan, the castle lord, with the Matsuzaki Shinchi in 1655-56 (Meireki 1-2) and the Kogobara Shinchi in 1673 (Enpo 1), and by the end of the Edo period, 25 locations totaling over 746 cho had been reclaimed. The northern part of the Yatsushiro Sea was reclaimed by the feudal domain, including the Kashima reclamation (Ryūhoku-cho, Yatsushiro County) in 1667 (Kanbun 7). The Kumamoto domain banned the development of new land in 1732 (Kyoho 17), but construction resumed after the Kagamimura Furushinchi in 1757 (Hōreki 7), and large-scale reclamation was carried out by the domain. ...
