〘名〙① (「かけすずりばこ（掛硯箱）」の略) 掛子(かけご)のあるすずり箱。外箱の縁に内箱がかかって重なるようにし、そこにすずりや墨や水入れを入れ、別に小物を入れる引き出しなどを作り、また、ふたをして提げることができるようになっている。※多聞院日記‐天正九年（1581）七月八日「番匠藤二郎来間、かけ硯申_二付之_一」② 江戸時代、廻船の船頭や水主が往来手形、送状などの重要書類や金銭を入れるため、座右に置いた硯箱を兼ねた手文庫。江戸後期になると、けやき製漆塗り、多数の鉄の金具で固めた堅牢で工芸的なものが廻船専用につくられた。今日では船箪笥と呼んでいる。※新川文書‐浦手形（1745‐46）「掛硯壱つ」
