It was originally a lion dance performed by children in Tsukigata Village, Nishikanbara County, Niigata Prefecture, but today it has been passed down as a folk art form and is performed in the grounds of Hakusan Shrine at the Tsukigata Festival (Kakubei Jizo Festival) on June 24th and 25th. There are various theories about its origin, such as it was a way to make a living or to seek revenge for one's parents, but it began at least during the Horeki period (1751-64), reached its peak from the Tenmei to Bunsei eras (1781-1830), and was incorporated into jiuta and nagauta dances. …

…蒲原（かんばら）獅子ともいう。新潟県西蒲原郡月潟村を本拠地とした子供たちによる門付の獅子舞曲芸であったが，今日では民俗芸能として伝承され，6月24,25日の月潟祭(角兵衛地蔵祭)に白山神社の境内で演じられている。由来については生計のためとか親の仇を捜すためとか諸説があって明らかでないが，少なくとも宝暦期(1751‐64)には始まっていて，天明から文政年間(1781‐1830)に盛行期を迎え，地唄や長唄物の舞踊にとり込まれたりもした。…
