…The construction of plane figures using only set squares and compasses, which was the subject of the best-known problem of ancient Greek geometers, is the problem of dividing a given angle into three parts (the angle trisection problem), (2) constructing a cube with twice the volume of a given cube (the cube doubling problem), and (3) constructing a square with the same area as a given circle (the circle square problem). These problems were studied by Greek geometers from around the 5th and 6th centuries BC, and attempts to solve them were relentless, but they remained unsolved and were passed down to posterity as the three great problems of Greek mathematics. …
